What is an estuary? An estuary is the wide mouth of a river where it is met and invaded by the sea. It is a semi-enclosed coastal body of water connected to the sea as far as the tidal limit.
Benefits
What are our benefits from estuaries?
Estuaries are among the most productive ecosystems on Earth. It provides us numerous ecological, economic, cultural, and aesthetic benefits and services.
Estuaries are amongst the most productive natural habitats in the world because the inflow of both seawater and freshwater provide high levels of nutrients in both the water column and sediment.
Estuaries provide habitats for a large number of organisms and support very high productivity.
Estuaries provide habitats for many fish nurseries like salmon and sea trout.
Migratory bird populations, such as the black-tailed godwit and others make essential use of estuaries.
Problems
What are our problems on estuaries?
Because of rapid growth and development, estuaries are among the most threatened ecosystems. The overuse of resources and poor land practices has resulted in a host of human health and natural resource problems.
About 60% of the world?s population is living along estuaries and the coast. In the US alone, about 50% of its population lives in coastal areas. In other parts of the world, coastal counties are growing 3x faster than counties elsewhere in the US.
Estuaries are suffering degradation because of sedimentation from soil erosion from deforestation overgrazing and other poor farming practices.
Likewise, other problems on estuaries are the ff; over overfishing, drainage, filling of wetlands and eutrophication due to excessive nutrients from sewage and animal wastes
Additional problems include; pollutants including heavy metals, PCBs, radionuclides and hydrocarbons from sewage inputs; and diking or damming for flood control or water diversion.
